FUMC Community Outreach

Members of the FUMC Westfield congregation reach out to help each other, community residents, and the people of the world in many ways.  To volunteer for or obtain further information on FUMC’s community outreach programs, please call the church office.

United Methodist Women

The United Methodist Women is a community of women who join together whose purpose is to:

·         Know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ

·         To develop a creative, supportive fellowship

·         To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church through yearly pledging and special fund-raising events

United Methodist Women provides an opportunity for women of all ages to make friendships in small group and large group settings.  All members meet in a general gathering on Saturday mornings four times a year where meaningful topics are addressed followed by a delicious luncheon.  Smaller groups called circles hold monthly meetings in members’ homes or at church.  These groups meet during the day and in the evening to accommodate members’ lifestyles.  We enthusiastically welcome new members.

Stephen Ministry

The Stephen Ministry is a ministry of caring offered to those in need of support.  Stephen Ministers are members of our congregation who have completed extensive training.  They provide one-on-one listening and emotional support for individuals in times of difficulty including grief, hospitalization and recovery, life transitions, disability, job crisis, divorce, and terminal illness.  A Stephen Minister maintains strict confidentiality as an essential aspect of sensitivity and respect for individuals and receives continuing education and skill building throughout their years of service.  Regular supervision by our staff ministers assures Stephen Ministers of support and guidance to maintain excellence in their caring.

The Food Cupboard

The FUMC Food Cupboard has been operating since 1982.  It is part of the Union County Food Bank program which serves the need of Union County.  It is open each Tuesday of the month to offer a full variety of food and support products.  Over the past twenty-two years, about twelve families have been served each month.  Church members and the Westfield community support the Cupboard with financial contributions and donations of food.

Homeless Hospitality

For seventeen years, FUMC has participated as an active member of the Interfaith Council for the Homeless of Union County.  With a team of volunteers, the church provides a week’s shelter, meals, and other services for approximately forty five adults and children.  Volunteers set up beds and furniture for each family group, provide and launder linens, provide meals, shop for incidentals, and act as dinner, overnight, and weekend day hosts.  Financial contributions from church members provide help for a variety of needs including lunch money for our guests, detergent for personal laundry, disposable diapers, etc.  FUMC hosted groups on four occasions in 2004.

Free Meals Program

The Free Meals Program serves the Plainfield area by providing complete, free meals for eighty to one hundred people on the second Monday of each month, for ten months of the year.  A group of volunteers plans menus, purchases and prepares food, sets up and serves the meal, and cleans up afterward.  The Plainfield Methodist Church hosts the activity while four other local churches, including FUMC Westfield, contribute funds and volunteers.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit organization that builds affordable housing for low income families who are in need of adequate shelter.  Through “partnership housing” recipients work side-by-side with volunteers from church and community groups to build simple, decent houses.  FUMC supports this worthy effort by providing Saturday work teams of volunteers who work through the Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity office.

Music and Youth Ministry Outreach Programs

Several other outreach programs are sponsored by specific church ministries.  Please see the Music Ministry page to obtain information on Coffee with Conscience, the Friday Night Concert Series, the Oratorio Society, and the Fife and Drum Corp.  Information on RISE can be found on the Youth Ministry page.
